{1559}{1664}Welcome to Vancouver, British Columbia,|Canada, and the set of Stargate SG-1. {1679}{1727}I'm Richard Dean Anderson. {1727}{1811}And I'm Brad Wright,|executive producer of Stargate SG-1. {1811}{1883}This is the gate room,|where we shoot our show. {1883}{1988}What we're gonna do is take you on a|behind-the-scenes look at Stargate SG-1. {1991}{2051}We're gonna interview cast and crew,... {2051}{2123}...and you'll get a look at the show|you've never seen before. {2123}{2204}- Where d'you wanna start?|- Why not at the beginning? {2207}{2261}- Such a writer.|- I know. {2363}{2411}Colonel Jack O'Neill? {2411}{2446}Retired. {2459}{2504}I'm Major Samuels. {2507}{2579}I'm underorders to bring you|to see General Hammond, sir. {2579}{2652}- Never heard of him.|- He replaced General West. {2675}{2755}He says it's important.|Has to do with the Stargate. {2855}{2938}I got a call from John Symes,|who was president of MGM. {2975}{3059}He talked to me about|this title that he had, Stargate,... {3059}{3159}...and this concept that they were|trying to make into a television series. {3239}{3322}Actually, his pitch to me|over the phone made sense,... {3323}{3395}...cos it sounded like|it would make a good TV series. {3395}{3493}Actually, a broader and more interesting|series than the actual movie. {3539}{3623}The thing that intrigued me|about the original Stargate movie... {3623}{3717}...was that it took a concept|that had been battered about a lot,... {3719}{3788}...by science fiction people in particular: {3791}{3882}that ancient Egypt was partially|or completely built by aliens. {3911}{4019}The Stargate movie took that theory and|turned it into a science fiction movie,... {4019}{4103}...which I thought was a lot of fun.|I wish I had thought of it! {4103}{4187}When I found out they were|planning on doing Stargate,... {4199}{4304}...I approached MGM on my own|and said "I'd really love to write the pilot." {4379}{4491}Jonathan had also approached MGM and|said "I'd really love to do this project",... {4499}{4599}...so John Symes, the clever man|that he is, decided to make us partners. {4631}{4739}So he called us and said "How'd you like|to do it together?" We said "Great." {4763}{4881}John just called me and said "I want you|to do this project." And I said "What is it?" {4895}{4992}He said that MGM had purchased|the rights to the Stargate franchise... {5051}{5135}...and were developing a series,|and he wanted me to be a part of it. {5135}{5244}So I looked at the movie a couple of times|and saw great potential for a series,... {5291}{5381}...because of all the elements involved.|So I signed on for it. {5387}{5459}It was originally supposed|to be a two-year gig. {5459}{5568}Showtime ordered 44 episodes. During|the first season they ordered another 44,... {5591}{5678}...so the ball started rolling|successfully pretty early on. {5687}{5748}But my involvement was by request. {5759}{5845}I told them "If we're gonna try|and get Rick involved,... {5879}{5977}...then he's gonna have to have|a lot more leeway with the character." {5987}{6068}I had to make sure|they were willing to put up with - {6071}{6131}well, endure - my sense of humour... {6131}{6216}...and somehow infiltrate it|into the character subtly,... {6239}{6287}...or with a sledgehammer. {6287}{6352}- "Lucy, I'm home!"|- I am not Lucy. {6383}{6449}For crying out loud, just open the door. {6503}{6587}Once all the pieces were|put into place to create the series,... {6587}{6701}...a big task still lay before us: to create|a story that stayed true to the feature,... {6707}{6766}...but was unique in its own way. {6767}{6815}And I think we pulled it off. {6815}{6881}Well, it wasn't without its challenges. {6971}{7082}To get the ball rolling and to execute|the vision that we all had for this series... {7163}{7240}...was sizing up to be|a pretty monumental task... {7271}{7357}...because Stargate is|a heavily visual-effects-laden show. {7668}{7750}The movie ended with|Daniel Jackson stuck on Abydos... {7764}{7869}...and Jack O'Neill having left the military,|and everything kind of shut down. {7908}{8015}So the fun thing about the pilot was|actually having the Stargate mothballed,... {8064}{8135}...and figuring out that it goes other places. {8160}{8266}And figuring out how to get Dr Jackson|back, cos he was a wonderful character. {8268}{8362}So that's what we set about to do,|and we wrote a pilot about that - {8364}{8476}about getting Jack O'Neill back into the|military, getting Jackson back to Earth,... {8496}{8574}...and discovering that|the gate goes other places. {8736}{8808}Permission to take a team|through the Stargate, sir? {8808}{8886}Consider yourself recalled|to active duty, Colonel. {8892}{8988}The one thing that we knew|we had to do was create this cartouche... {9072}{9144}...that showed there were|hundreds of Stargates out there. {9144}{9247}And we stayed true to the myth that|the Stargate was used to pull humans... {9264}{9336}...through the wormhole|to other planets as slaves. {9336}{9394}(distorted) Goodchoice, Teal'c. {9396}{9440}Perfect specimen. {9528}{9624}For the pilot, we shot in the largest|sound stage in North America... {9624}{9697}...because we had|such massive sets to put up. {9708}{9792}And the Stargate facility itself|is two storeys tall,... {9852}{9928}...um... and it's got|all these different levels. {9948}{10059}The Stargate itself is 22 feettall, so|in order to shoot up at it with a camera,... {10104}{10164}...the set has to be almost twice that tall. {10164}{10236}So we pulled off|some pretty big stuff there,... {10236}{10312}...and we had an amazing team|behind us doing it. {10356}{10429}I remember Michael Shanks|and I walking in... {10440}{10516}...and seeing the Stargate|for the very first time. {10524}{10571}My God! Look at this! {10632}{10728}The energy the gate must release|to create a stable wormhole! It's... {10752}{10824}It's... astronomical,|to use exactly the right word. {10824}{10934}Just walking in and suddenly seeing the|Stargate, we both went "Wow, it's huge!" {10980}{11066}You can actually see the fluctuations|in the event horizon. {11088}{11149}We were actually quite blown away. {11160}{11272}Oddly enough, the original Stargate had|been stored out in the Californian desert... {11328}{11405}...and had completely|fallen apart, disintegrated. {11412}{11496}It was junk at that point,|but it was still being stored. {11496}{11610}What I was able to get from it was that we|could at least get a mould for the detail... {11628}{11717}...and we didn't have to start|from scratch sculpting a mould. {11724}{11780}So we built our own Stargate. {11784}{11868}(Glassner) Our guys had to engineer|a Stargate that would work. {11868}{11961}I mean, it doesn't have a wormhole|that goes to other planets,... {11964}{12063}...but it actually turns, the chevrons lock.|It's computer controlled,... {12072}{12179}...so we can program in addresses and|the right ones will go to the right place. {12180}{12273}There's a 30-foot gear inside that thing,|so everytime it spins... {12288}{12390}In four seasons that chevron has never|missed. It's computer operated now. {12432}{12492}We can turn it anywhere|and it locks on a dime. {12492}{12594}So our special-effects people did|a great job in putting that part together. {12684}{12791}A huge part of the appeal of Stargate SG-1|is the action and the visual effects. {12840}{12946}But all of that would be meaningless,|if it wasn't for our strong ensemble cast. {12984}{13077}Which I believe is the most important|element of all movie making. {13080}{13140}It's clearly the most important thing. {13140}{13186}Yes. Yes, the cast. {13416}{13480}General Hammond, Colonel Jack O'Neill. {13488}{13523}Retired. {13536}{13572}I can see that. {13572}{13620}Me, I'm on my last tour. {13620}{13692}Time to get my thoughts together,|write a book. {13692}{13776}You everthink of writing about|your exploits in the line of duty? {13776}{13824}I've thought about it. {13824}{13904}But then I'd have to shoot anyone|that actually read it. {13944}{13980}That's a joke, sir. {13980}{14021}Yes, of course. {14028}{14137}The Jack O'Neill of the film - played by|Kurt Russell - went into a dark place,... {14172}{14268}...and his adventure with Daniel Jackson|brought him out of it again. {14268}{14352}Kurt did a phenomenal job|for that O'Neill and that movie. {14352}{14439}You can get away with it|in just a one-movie character arc. {14460}{14544}But for Rick to be interested|in a long-running series,... {14544}{14641}...he has to have a much broader range|for it to be interesting to him. {14724}{14796}Just remember, I retired.|You wanted me back. {14820}{14900}When I met Rick...|He's got such a natural presence. {14928}{15027}He's got such a natural sense of humour.|He's flip. He's a little glib. {15036}{15083}That's Jack O'Neill. {15084}{15163}Anybody with a snake in their head,|raise their hand. {15204}{15216}Damn! {15216}{15269}- What now?|- Now we die. {15300}{15348}Well, that's a bad plan. {15348}{15420}Lately I get this weird feeling|when I'm near Teal'c. {15420}{15456}Hey, who doesn't? {15456}{15491}Well,... {15504}{15528}...this sucks. {15528}{15598}I wanna make sure|you get one thing right. {15600}{15653}It's O'Neill, with two Ls. {15672}{15772}There's another Colonel O'Neil with one L.|He has no sense of humour at all. {15816}{15881}Kurt Russell is just a phenomenal guy. {15888}{15952}He did a great job with the character. {16008}{16101}But I knew, just by looking at his hair,|that I couldn't do that. {16128}{16195}I mean, who can do that with their hair? {16200}{16284}The type of humour I appreciate most|is mostly British humour,... {16284}{16372}...but my favourite show on television|is The Simpsons, and... {16416}{16509}Partly because it's a cartoon,|first of all, but it's also smart. {16596}{16643}I remember something. {16680}{16723}There was a man. {16764}{16835}He's bald|and wears a short-sleeved shirt... {16836}{16902}...and somehow he's very important to me. {16956}{17009}I think his name is Homer. {17052}{17099}Doesn't ring a bell. {17196}{17283}When Jonathan and I were|first conceiving her character,... {17304}{17405}...I was concerned - and arguably so -|that we were creating a superwoman. {17424}{17503}She was a military officer,|she was a physicist,... {17532}{17597}...she was beautiful - she was perfect. {17628}{17725}She had a lot of those attributes|that make a character ring false,... {17772}{17833}...if it's not portrayed correctly. {17844}{17898}Sam Carter was very linear. {17940}{18045}She was one-dimensional, in that she was|this out-to-prove-herself feminist... {18084}{18181}...sitting on her soap box|with this raging diatribe about equality,... {18192}{18293}...which I personally, as a feminist,|found really tired and really boring. {18300}{18399}I take it you're Colonel O'Neill.|Captain Samantha Carter reporting, sir. {18432}{18488}But, of course, you go by Sam? {18492}{18564}Don't worry, Major.|I played with dolls when I was a kid. {18564}{18671}So I talked to the writers about it|and said "A: women don't talk like this,... {18684}{18752}...B: why can't she just be in the team... {18756}{18843}...without constantly|raising the flag that she's a woman?" {18852}{18899}That was refreshing! {18900}{18970}She's, I think, an integral member of SG-1. {19008}{19100}She loves the people that she works with|and would die for them. {19116}{19206}And that's something I like about her:|her incredible loyalty. {19224}{19306}And she's starting to warm up a bit|and have some fun. {19332}{19374}What you doin'? {19380}{19484}They salvaged a couple of replicator|pieces from the ocean. I'm having a look. {19596}{19636}Is that wise? {19644}{19745}There's no discernible energy being|emitted. It's safe to say they're dead. {19764}{19805}Well, I'm off. {19824}{19880}- Still going fishing?|- Yep. {19920}{19976}- Still stayin'here?|- Yeah. {19992}{20037}- OK.|- Have fun. {20088}{20136}Yah sure, you betcha. {20148}{20196}They should never be together. {20196}{20304}Sure there's potential for us to fall in love.|We're definitely attracted to each other. {20304}{20416}And that's fine, but we need to temper it|with the fact that it's not going anywhere. {20424}{20484}We had sort of a three-episode arc... {20484}{20578}...where you see they admit|there's deeper feelings for each other. {20580}{20624}I didn't leave... {20724}{20805}...because I'd have rather|died myself than lose Carter. {20940}{21002}- Why?|- Because I care about her. {21120}{21178}A lot more than I'm supposed to. {21204}{21288}We leave it at "OK, we admit it,|we finally said it out loud." {21288}{21384}"I love you, you love me", or "I would|die for you, you would die for me." {21384}{21453}And not just because we're in the military. {21468}{21521}This is as far as it goes. {21528}{21579}What are you smiling at? {21600}{21635}Nothin'. {21636}{21743}I don't wanna dismiss the idea that there'd|ever be a future for the two of them. {21780}{21836}Who knows? Tune in next week. {21876}{21959}Carter! Uh... I'm sorry.|I didn't know you were in here. {22080}{22132}What the hell is goin'on? {22140}{22199}- I want you.|- Why? I mean, no! {22212}{22297}Carter, this is a little outta line,|don't you think?Agh! {22308}{22351}For cryin'out... {22464}{22500}Cha'hari! {22560}{22596}Cha'hari. {22608}{22650}Lower your guns. {22716}{22755}Hello, Jack. {22776}{22820}Uh, welcome back. {22944}{23040}Michael Shanks walks in and does|a perfect imitation of James Spader. {23076}{23162}He portrayed the Daniel Jackson|from the future perfectly. {23208}{23291}And, um... I knew that|that was a great place to start. {23328}{23433}And I also knew that that meant he was|gonna be capable of going much farther. {23460}{23542}And I think over the course of|the last four seasons... {23544}{23639}...Daniel has grown from|the archaeologist nerd that he began as,... {23676}{23724}...and he's become a capable soldier. {23724}{23824}You see him with a P-90 running down|the halls in episode 1 of season 5. {23880}{23976}I think the best way to put it is he is|a type of moral conscience for the team. {23976}{24085}He started off being that token translator,|but, due to the nature of our show,... {24096}{24183}...we can't have every alien race|speaking another language. {24204}{24276}He's become more of|a moral centre to the team. {24276}{24355}He's the person|who tries to see outside ofthe box. {24384}{24468}We've only seen one side of this.|Do we know why they're fighting? {24468}{24552}- For their lives.|- Yes. I was all forsaving those lives. {24552}{24626}But we're about to go|way, way, way beyond that. {24636}{24732}We're about to turn the tide of a world war|that we know nothing about,... {24732}{24804}...against an enemy|that we know nothing about. {24804}{24909}Is that the right way to get technology?|Yes. But is it the right thing to do? {24912}{25015}He adds that other dimension of "Let's|look at this more as human beings... {25020}{25104}...than as some people who have|to follow orders to achieve a goal." {25104}{25193}So I think he's the naive one,|he's the more innocent one,... {25260}{25345}...but he's also the believer|in the best of human nature. {25368}{25439}Don't! Don't, don't, don't shoot! Ka! Ke ka! {25512}{25572}- Daniel?|- What did you just say? {25572}{25660}- I think I asked him not to kill me.|- And they're buyin' that? {25848}{25942}He's the only guy out of the cast -|when we were picking everyone - {25944}{26047}who we all saw and went "OK. Teal'c.|Good. Moving on." It was so obvious! {26064}{26174}He's got the voice and presence, his arms|are as thick as my waist. He was the guy. {26208}{26239}You! {26256}{26366}It's very difficult to write for Teal'c. He|doesn't make suggestions or make jokes. {26448}{26554}He doesn't share in the same banter|that the other three often participate in. {26580}{26691}But he is, in so many ways, the centre,|the still one.
