{515}{622}If you're lucky enough to have a hit TV|series, odds are you'll get fan support. {647}{720}We have a phenomenal|legion of fans behind us. {731}{803}They can be found worldwide|and their numbers keep growing. {803}{895}Yeah. They're also very dedicated,|with numerous conventions,... {899}{1001}...a slew of Stargate SG-1 web sites,|many paying tribute to you, my friend. {1031}{1088}Which I believe is the most... {1091}{1139}- Maybe not.|- Sure. {1139}{1234}Needless to say that without them|there might not be a Stargate SG-1. {1235}{1307}So it would be only fair to explore|the world of Stargate SG-1... {1307}{1406}...through the eyes of our fans or,|as they call themselves, "Gaters". {1727}{1785}I wanna say about one thing,... {1799}{1894}...when Jonathan and I first sold|this show to Showtime with MGM,... {1931}{2003}...we went to dinner|to celebrate and we said... {2003}{2108}..."We won't know if we're successful|until we have maybe a big convention." {2159}{2209}(cheering andscreaming) {2279}{2363}- (woman in crowd) We love you, Amanda!|- Oh! Thank you. {2387}{2434}Thank you very much. {2435}{2538}Our fans are so generous. Some things|people have come up to me and said... {2555}{2639}One woman came up to me|at a convention and I'll never forget it. {2639}{2746}I was signing autographs and she came|up, looked at me and burst into tears,... {2771}{2846}...and she said|"You make me a better person." {2855}{2902}And I went "Whoa." {2939}{2997}And she meant it from her heart. {3011}{3099}And I was like "I don't know|how I've done that, but wow." {3119}{3215}I'm having a fantastic time. Christopher|Judge was amazing. He was so funny. {3215}{3297}And all the actors are so personable.|They're amazing. {3311}{3419}You have these personalities on TV. Who|knows what they're gonna be in real life? {3419}{3525}And I think they're even more dynamic|in person than on TV. They're fantastic. {3563}{3627}- How's everyone doin'?|- (cheering) {3899}{3971}And just the people|and how nice they were... {3995}{4072}...and the distances|they travelled to get there... {4091}{4181}...was actually really overwhelming.|It was a great experience. {4223}{4309}Over the next two days we will|have members of the Jaffa,... {4331}{4379}...the Goa'uld and the Tok'ra. {4379}{4479}I enjoy meeting the fans of the show|and, to tell you the honest truth,... {4835}{4895}And, believe me, people watch them all. {4895}{4967}- My favourite episode? "Upgrades".|- "Cold Lazarus". {4967}{5015}- "A Hundred Days".|- "Need". {5015}{5106}- "The Fifth Race" is very good. "1969".|- "Singularity". {5123}{5171}The convention was an eye-opener. {5171}{5279}You walk into this convention and you see|these people who are fanatical fans... {5291}{5377}...to the point where they create|the wardrobe and show up. {5399}{5500}And they just know everything about|the show and they are true, true fans. {5567}{5614}It's pretty amazing. {5615}{5705}That was great. It was fun.|It's a great crowd, a great group. {5711}{5807}We're overwhelmed by the response.|We didn't expect it to be this big. {5807}{5909}I had a wonderful time. You get a chance|to meet the fans and it's amazing. {5915}{6015}Because they're sci-fi buffs,|they're generally extremely bright people. {6059}{6131}As warm and as wonderful|and as odd... (laughs) {6131}{6184}...as anyone you encounter! {6203}{6299}As a matter offact, half a dozen|of the people who were in Australia... {6299}{6381}...flew to the one in Vancouver.|I found it fascinating. {6395}{6483}Stargate is huge in Germany.|Stargate ist klasse in Deutsch. {6491}{6574}I remember we were talking|about the fans of the show... {6575}{6678}...and he said "You know some people|actually think the Stargate is real?" {6683}{6774}And I thought "OK, maybe there is|an interesting story there... {6779}{6848}...about the world of conspiracy theories... {6851}{6935}...and people who think|that there are aliens among us." {6935}{6995}A top-secret government programme... {6995}{7079}...involving instantaneous travel|to other solar systems... {7079}{7149}...by means of a device|known as a Stargate. {7163}{7259}Sounds like a good idea for a TVshow,|if you're into that sort of thing. {7307}{7412}Colonel, let's not play games. If it isn't|true, why would you come all this way? {7415}{7456}OK. The truth. {7500}{7593}There is a top-secret government|programme called Project Stargate. {7608}{7690}- I knew it!|- It has nothing to do with space travel. {7716}{7764}What does it have to do with? {7764}{7799}Magnets. {7848}{7932}- What is that supposed to mean?|- No. I've already said too much. {7932}{8012}When our show goes on the air,|within three hours... {8064}{8176}...there are 100, 200, 300 posts all posing|their opinions, all finding the holes,... {8232}{8335}...all saying they got this wrong|or the science was right in this, or wrong. {8352}{8409}In the episode "Tangent",... {8412}{8504}...where we had done one shot|where their ship crossed the sun... {8544}{8616}...and briefly occluded it|and then went away. {8616}{8693}It was just a simple,|elegant visual-effect shot. {8712}{8822}That garnered about 500 posts saying|"If the ship was leaving the sun's orbit,... {8832}{8942}...then how could it possibly have crossed|the path at 90*?" I just smiled at that. {8964}{9064}What I smiled at more was yet another fan|posting an animated diagram... {9108}{9221}...showing exactly the orbital path the ship|could have taken to have passed Jupiter... {9240}{9336}...and crossed in front of the sun,|allowing the camera to be in this position. {9336}{9384}It just blew my mind. {9384}{9476}I think people really care about|these core people. I really do. {9504}{9576}At least that's what I get|from the fan mail... {9576}{9653}...or from being out there|and talking to the fans. {9660}{9720}It is a sci-fi show. They love that part of it. {9720}{9792}They love the action|cos that's what the show is about. {9792}{9876}But you can't take away from|the fact you have great characters... {9876}{9936}...and they care about these people. {9936}{10047}We are so lucky to have this fan base.|We really are. They're terrific. They're fun! {10056}{10143}- Thank you very much, everyone.|- Yeah. Thanks, everybody. {10236}{10349}Beyond the fantasy of science fiction is a|glimmer of reality in Stargate's universe. {10380}{10470}The possibility of infinite worlds|is shared by all mankind... {10476}{10548}...and the source of study|for many sciences. {10560}{10656}The study of past civilisations|was the basis for the series itself,... {10656}{10749}...and certainly the urge for discovery|is the heart of each story. {10752}{10836}We're concerned with incorporating|reality wherever possible. {10836}{10948}And, because of our strong fan support,|if we miss something, they'll call us on it. {10956}{11044}So we often turn to technical|consultants for a little help. {11304}{11340}- Colonel.|- General. {11340}{11364}- Major.|- General. {11364}{11388}- Doctor.|- General. {11388}{11493}We gave them not only access to the|Cheyenne Mountain complex to shoot it,... {11508}{11596}...but gave them background stories|of all the characters,... {11616}{11688}...right down to what ribbons|they'd wear on their uniforms. {11688}{11772}We gave them the uniform regulations|and hair advice,... {11784}{11884}...plot lines and appropriate|military relationships - that kind of stuff. {11916}{12006}We gave them all that information,|and we read every script... {12012}{12123}...to make sure everything is done the way|it would really be done in the Air Force. {12144}{12192}Well, with all due respect, Doctor, I... {12192}{12287}It is appropriate to refer to a person|by rank, not their salutation. {12300}{12365}You should call me Captain, not Doctor. {12372}{12456}Captain Carter's assignment to this unit|is not an option, it's an order. {12456}{12520}I'm an Air Force officer, just like you. {12528}{12631}The Air Force chief of staff, General|Michael Ryan, met with Hank Cohen,... {12636}{12684}...the president of MGM Television. {12684}{12784}They hit it off and Hank Cohen|invited him up to see the Stargate set... {12804}{12900}...and decided it would be a great idea|that, as long as he's going,... {12900}{12969}...why doesn't he write him into the scene? {12972}{13025}Have you met General Ryan? {13056}{13098}Hello, Colonel. {13104}{13181}- The General Ryan? Chief of staff?|- That's right. {13284}{13344}Shouldn't there have been|a memo or something? {13344}{13442}We had him do a little cameo|and I got to talkin' to him afterwards,... {13452}{13507}...or during the shooting,... {13524}{13613}...tryin' to, you know, relax him|a little bit. Very tense guy. {13644}{13750}And I took him aside at one point and|said "Do you have colonels like this?" {13764}{13874}"Are there guys like what I'm doing with|the character in the actual Air Force?" {13908}{14003}Before I could even finish the sentence|he said "Yes. And worse." {14028}{14123}And I went "Great. OK."|He said "You're doin' a fine job, son." {14148}{14238}I've read a lot about you, Colonel,|in General Hammond's reports. {14244}{14280}Yes, sir? {14280}{14334}Thus far we like your work. {14364}{14420}Thank you, sir. I like yours. {14424}{14499}Your Air Force. The Air Force.|I love the Air Force. {14520}{14620}To see someone of that stature and|to deal with them, I was so nervous... {14652}{14742}...that he was totally settled down|by the time we gotto him... {14760}{14844}...because it took nine takes|for me to get three words out. {14844}{14894}Anything else, Colonel? {14904}{14964}- No, sir.|- Then you're dismissed. {14964}{15000}Thank you, sir. {15000}{15049}Sirs. Sir. Both of you. {15204}{15264}Got your hands full|with that one, eh, George? {15264}{15367}This cast has the most professional|actors. They really wanna get it right. {15384}{15468}They take a lot of pride|in getting everything right,... {15468}{15552}...from the appropriate salute|to wearing the uniforms correctly. {15552}{15648}They ask us what would we do|in this situation, how would we play it. {15648}{15745}Not just what's on the script,|but how would we make that come alive. {15792}{15876}Cadet, I'd like to ask you a few questions.|Answer honestly. {15876}{15912}Yes, ma'am. {15912}{15972}- Who the hell do you think you are?|- Ma'am? {15972}{16061}D'you think you're better than we are,|too good for the Air Force? {16068}{16140}- No, ma'am.|- Those rules and regulations... {16140}{16200}- ...don't apply to you, right?|- I don't feel that way. {16200}{16245}Oh, I think you do. {16248}{16313}And I think deep down you wanna leave. {16320}{16387}Let me do you a favour. The door's open. {16416}{16504}- Why don't you just quit and go home?|- No, ma'am. I won't quit. {16536}{16568}Good. {16572}{16665}There's a lot of situations|where we run into regular problems... {16704}{16764}...that we'd run into in the Air Force. {16764}{16846}Such as Amanda Tapping,|the Major Carter character,... {16908}{17009}...found herself in what we in the military|say is "in-between hair",... {17028}{17089}...where it's too short to put up... {17124}{17189}...and yet too long to meet regulations. {17220}{17257}Nice hair. {17280}{17364}- Uh, Air Force.|- I can't imagine that - going military. {17388}{17452}I had to study as much as I could,... {17460}{17553}...and when I found out I had the role|I had two weeks to prepare. {17556}{17652}So I got a personal trainer to get the|physical aspect of the character down... {17652}{17705}...and met with Navy SEALs. {17712}{17796}- What are they doing?|- (Teal'c) They wish to take Apophis alive. {17796}{17856}The science aspect|was a lot of homework. {17856}{17939}I got on the Internet,|I read Stephen Hawking's book... {17940}{18000}...and anything I could get my hands on,... {18000}{18111}...because the only way I could play this|character is if I understood what she said. {18132}{18206}And she says a lot of|scientific technobabble. {18216}{18319}And if I don't understand what I'm saying,|then I'm lying and I'm cheating. {18324}{18403}And it would be very easy|to just say those words... {18408}{18480}...and put an intonation to them|that sounds convincing. {18480}{18564}But for me I had to understand|what she was talking about. {18564}{18643}Oh, here we go.|Another scientist. General, please. {18648}{18702}Theoretical astrophysicist. {18708}{18744}Which means? {18744}{18816}Which means she's smarter|than you are, Colonel. {18816}{18923}You're constantly researching. When you|come across a doctor, you're picking... {18948}{19045}I say "you", but I pick their brains|for any information I can get. {19068}{19181}But being on the set we're very fortunate|in having med techs with us at all times,... {19236}{19341}...so we know what to do and make it look|like we really know what we're doing. {19368}{19440}- Lock him up.|- Sir, with all due respect, he is injured. {19440}{19524}He won't be any good to you|unless we get him into the OR. {19524}{19621}Do what you need to keep him alive,|Doctor. We've gota lot of questions. {19632}{19729}Yes, sir. OK, let's move him.|I'm gonna set him on two IVs. Let's go. {19980}{20079}In terms of Egyptology and all kinds|of mythology, not just Egyptian,... {20100}{20196}...we were fortunate to have a woman|on our staff named Katharyn Powers,... {20196}{20283}...who was extremely well versed|in all things mythological. {20328}{20388}She also wrote several episodes... {20388}{20460}...and would come running|into our offices excited... {20460}{20569}...because she had just read a new myth|that lent itself very well to Stargate,... {20580}{20647}...and we would build episodes around it. {20652}{20693}(prayer chant) {20868}{20964}They have called me a couple of times|to translate dialogue in the series... {20964}{21044}...when they wanted|Ancient Egyptian to be spoken,... {21048}{21140}...for two episodes: "Serpent's Song"|and "Forever in a Day". {21180}{21252}I speak for Sha're, who can|no longer speak for herself. {21252}{21304}(speaks Ancient Egyptian) {21336}{21396}I have spoken no lies,|nor acted with deceit. {21396}{21501}When I was gonna screen-test for the role|I went to the Royal Ontario Museum... {21504}{21606}...and looked at the Egyptian exhibits,|as if that was gonna help me somehow. {21612}{21704}This line recurs several times...|"Domavatus vestul motabilum." {21756}{21804}"Conqueror of time." {21804}{21897}In this context, I'd say more like|"Master of the uncertain past." {21900}{21948}You're a skilled linguist, Dr Jackson. {21948}{22060}The terms that are used in the series and|references to some practices and so on,... {22092}{22176}...it's a blend of things|they've made up for the series... {22176}{22273}...and other things which derive|from real Ancient Egyptian practices. {22308}{22389}So some of the deities:|there's Osiris, the god Ra,... {22392}{22460}...the goddess Isis, the wife of Osiris... {22464}{22544}...and a fertility-goddess,|mother-goddess figure,... {22548}{22621}...a powerful, magical force|in Ancient Egypt. {22680}{22764}All these things come from real|Ancient Egyptian mythology. {22764}{22819}(distorted) Make no mistake. {22836}{22882}Osiris will return. {22908}{22987}And the rivers of the Earth|will run red with blood. {23496}{23600}As you can see, the world of Stargate|SG-1 extends way beyond the TV screen. {23652}{23712}But at the heart of this show|is its cast and crew. {23712}{23818}From day one we've been fortunate to|have established a strong sense offamily. {23820}{23892}It's part of what I feel|makes Stargate SG-1 succeed. {23892}{23944}That, and a good caterer. {23976}{24048}Arguably the most important|aspect of TV production. {24048}{24091}Life in general. {24096}{24200}Let's hear whatthe cast and crew have|to say about working on Stargate SG-1. {24636}{24684}Those are the rewards of the job! {24684}{24759}On a lot of shows I've done,|people are like... {24768}{24828}..."We'll go in, shoot the show and leave." {24828}{24934}Here they buy into it a lot of times,|and there's a lot of laughter on the set. {25044}{25155}This crew likes coming to work here. This|cast likes coming to work here. It's fun. {25176}{25248}The fact that Richard has|a great sense of humour,... {25248}{25330}...Christopher Judge has|a wonderful sense of humour... {25344}{25416}...and probably one of|the best laughs I've ever heard. {25416}{25462}(warm, heartylaugh) {25488}{25548}And so you have all these elements... {25548}{25644}...and all these really goofy, wacky people|who know each other so well. {25644}{25702}Yeah. Our sets are a lot of fun. {25704}{25770}Richard Dean Anderson is the patriarch. {25776}{25848}And Don Davis is like|the crazy grandfather. {25908}{25982}Michael's the younger brother,|the wild child. {26016}{26112}I'm the older brother that's been|through what Michael's been through,... {26112}{26208}...who tries to give him advice,|even though the producers would say... {26208}{26293}...I'm the one that led him|off the path of righteousness! {26316}{26385}So we have this a typical family structure. {26460}{26561}You see a lot of shows on TV, and|when you have press junkets they say... {26592}{26696}..."We're just one happy family. We love|each other. Life's great and good." {26736}{26825}And then once they're off set|they don't speak to each other. {26844}{26939}We do. We go play golf, we go out|to dinner, we do things together. {26952}{26997}It's a great show. {27000}{27072}Colonel O'Neill,|what the hellare you doing?! {27072}{27128}In the middle of my backswing?! {27132}{27229}Richard Dean Anderson is, like Michael|and like Robert, a friend now. {27288}{27380}It's amazing how close series television|brings people together. {27396}{27420}Can I help you? {27420}{27502}The only thing I've ever demanded|is a sense of humour. {27516}{27623}It's not fun to get up at 4.30 in the morning|to go rig a light. It's hard work. {27648}{27684}They look serious, don't they? {27684}{27790}Year after year makes you appreciate|what a core family we have. And there is. {27792}{27872}There is the mamas and the papas|and all the babies. {27888}{28000}And every beginning of a new year, just|like the SG-1 team, is like a little family. {28080}{28154}And it makes it|so much more fun each year,... {28176}{28272}...and you appreciate it more each year,|to come back and see smiling faces... {28272}{28381}...and to see, the first day, everybody|so genuinely excited to see each other,... {28416}{28500}...and to be doing what we're doing|and be successful doing it. {28500}{28558}I think it's been a real treat. {28572}{28623}Well, I saw that planet. {28632}{28669}(laughter) {28716}{28765}I saw it. I was there. {28776}{28887}Do I love coming to work? You bet. Do I|still pinch myself? Absolutely. It's great. {28908}{29018}If you have a good story and good casting|and execute it, you'll have a good show. {29508}{29604}It looks like our journey has come|full circle, so it's fair to ask... {29604}{29700}...what is it about Stargate SG-1|that makes it so popular and unique? {29700}{29796}Well, for one, it feeds upon|our fascination to explore the unknown... {29796}{29868}...and seek out life|in other parts of the universe. {29868}{29964}What I love is we're not using spaceships,|we're using the Stargate. {29964}{30024}The human element is what's important. {30024}{30136}It's a great way to study ourselves, our|society, under the guise of science fiction. {30156}{30228}The adventures that exist|beyond the Stargate... {30228}{30288}...are only limited by our imagination. {30288}{30378}So you can be sure there are|a lot more worlds to encounter... {30396}{30489}- ...and many more stories to tell.|- Only if we get back to work. {30492}{30528}I'm Brad Wright. {30528}{30605}I'm Richard Dean Anderson.|Thanks for joining us. {30696}{30794}Comedy reigns here at Stargate SG-1...|somewhere else in the building. {30840}{30936}We're not using giant spaceships|to get there. We're using the Stargate. {30936}{30994}The human element is important. {31056}{31092}What? What did I do? {31092}{31136}Nothing. It's me. {31152}{31251}Come on, the cameras are rollin'.|Do a director... Do a director thing. {31260}{31320}Rick, that was a wonderful performance. {31320}{31380}I haven't seen you act|like that for a long time. {31380}{31420}Very natural.
